Dateline: Portales, New Mexico. Lindsey Elementary School. 1^st grade homeroom teacher was Miss Romero. Somewhere along the way that year she became Mrs. Thomas. Talk about messing with a young man’s head? I thought people could just change their names at will.

She must have been from South Texas too because I remember saving egg shells all year long so we could make Cascarones for Easter. Otherwise the cascarones tradition was lost on us Eastern New Mexico peeps. Way cool.

I’m the one in striped pants. When are striped pants coming back in style? Notice most of the boys are wearing hard heeled shoes? I can’t remember if this was just part of dressing up for Picture Day or if we wore them all the time?

I remember everyone’s name except for two of the kids.

Funny that I’m only related to one kid in this picture considering my step-family is huge and the relation is from my mom’s side of the family. Hello cousin Jimmy.

Tricky Dick on the calendar. Oh those were the days. LOL.

I remember the drawing on the bulletin board by the calendar was mine. I was always a teacher’s pet. It’s a kite.

1st grade was the year I got hit in the eye with a rock. They would discover my detached retina in 2001. I had a detached retina all those years. I was a tough kid.

Can you tell Lindsey Elementary was in “taco town”? Everyone in this class was Latino or “Spanish” as we grew up calling ourselves, except for one kid. Hello. Robin.

I hear they are knocking down Lindsey Middle School now and building a brand spanking new school right next door. Ahh the memories.

PS: Mr. Glasscock was the principal for years. In my best Beavis & Butthead voice: ha huh, he said Glasscock.

When Tommy was ill and had his major operation in Albuquerque, NM, Tia Bea; Tia Geri; Tia Marylou; Tia Gloria and other various relations made us supper that very long day. Apparently all the Montoya's are excellent cooks. Even by relation. My cousin Joe Jr.'s wife Manin made the picadillo and I have had fantasies about it ever since. That was circa 2005. In fact I still dream about that entire meal. It was THAT good.

Found this recipe for Picadillo last summer @ HEB Central Market during their Hatch Green Chile Festival. Thought I'd give it a try still always knowing that I could never match Manin's Picadillo.

This recipe was just OK. I will not make it again.

REVIEW: My own Pot Roast & Arugula Panini with Ham & Cheese Croquettes

So yesterday I made this meal with the intentions of continuing on and using the left-overs for today's lunch. Glad I did.

My friend from the Food Network, Claire Robinson had this wonderful idea on her show. I ran with it.

The croquettes were oh so good. Glad I made plenty. I may have more as a snack later.

My version of the panini was just OK. I used my bacon press to squash the sandwich. Oh well.

REVIEW: My own Tuesday Pot Roast w/ Mushroom Gravy and Parsnip-Potato Mash

So it's nice to be cooking in my remodeled kitchen documented here and there is nothing like comfort food to get things going the right way.

I like Claire Robinson's Five Ingredient Fix show on Food Network. I like to keep things simple.

Tried her Pot Roast w/ Mushroom Gravy and Parsnip-Potato Mash and it was pretty good but what I like is that it will be my lunch in another recipe tomorrow.

So the kitchen in la casa chica is a galley kitchen with a drop ceiling. This ranch house was built in 1970 and that was the style typical of that era. It opens up on one side to the dining room and the entrance to the garage is on the other side thru the laundry room/pantry. From the dining area you step down to the sunken living room. Appliances are all electric.

Ideally, the desire was to raise the drop ceiling; install a gas line for a gas range; have the cabinets installed professionally and open up the kitchen to the living room, but there were too many mechanical components hidden in that drop ceiling; it was too expensive to move the gas lines; professional installation was pricey and the sunken living was not conducive to merging with the kitchen.

I’m handy yet this would become the biggest project I have completed. I am pleased.

We decided on an IKEA kitchen because they received good reviews from Consumer Reports, even better than some of the well know cabinet brands. And even though I had once said, I am never assembling another piece of furniture; I reluctantly agreed to go this route because so much money was saved in the long run.

My tendency is toward dark woods. Every piece of furniture in this house is dark wood and the floors are light. We decided to buck that trend and picked out a light color wood for the cabinetry and dark wood floors.

Originally decided to stick with the same appliances but I hatched a plan to garner additional counter space by getting rid of the wall oven and getting a range oven instead. The plan worked and a great deal was found on a suite of stainless steel appliances.

So a budget was set. Ordered the cabinets and appliances and waited. In the meantime lots of other excitement occurred including my brother’s @TmarkM PHD graduation documented here.

The cabinets arrived on December 14^th: all 752 boxes. Teardown of the old kitchen began on December 18^th. It took one day to demolish everything and haul it all to the curb for pick-up. Everything was trashed including the kitchen sink.

It took the entire day to assemble the sink wall of the kitchen on day two. IKEA has a unique wall cabinet hanging system where the cabinets hang on a rack instead of to the wall. This ingenuity made for easy installation.

The bottom cabinets have a unique leg system where you are able to raise the legs to level the cabinets. This also made for easy installation.

The range wall was installed on the third day. The problem with IKEA instructions is that they do not have a written language on them, only cartoons of the assembly process. This made it difficult to determine what order to complete the assembly and installation process. Learned a whole new IKEA language: Adel, Domsjo, Plinth, Akurum, Rationell and Streckett. Gotta love the Swedes.

Assembling and installing the cabinets was the easy part. They say the talking snake is in the details and whoever came up with that saying was not lying. We spend the better part of almost the entire rest of the month messing with the finer details of this kitchen remodel. Granted, now we were only working on weekends to complete the project but there were lots of little things to wrap up. In addition there were two holiday weekends that ate up the remodel time.

Backsplash fitting was no fun. Trim setting up was no fun. Under-cabinet lighting set up was no fun. Floor installation was no fun. Installation of Microwave and vent system was no fun.

What is fun? I love my new deep drawers. I love my soft close drawers and doors. I love my sleek clean lines. I love my adjustable shelves. I love my expanded counter space. I love my giant farmhouse sink.

So now all that remains are minor touch-ups here and there. I finally have my kitchen back and can step back and view a job well done. It’s not my dream kitchen, but dammit, it’s my kitchen.

No professional assistance was used during this kitchen remodel. My rough hands and my aching back prove that fact. My Grampo Saiz would be proud.

REVIEW: McDONALD'S MAC SNACK WRAP

Cold after the Spurs game, we stop by McDonald's for some hot chocolate. Me being the adventurous type, order the new Mac Snack Wrap.

OMG OMG OMG. Seriously, this thing was nasty. Threw it away as quickly as I could. Will never order one again. Only wish bad things for this new product. Discontinue it as soon as possible please. Save your money. Do not order this disgusting, foul thing.

REVIEW: Ruby Tuesday's

Because I am starving and Cheesecake Factory was way super da busy, we stop by Ruby Tuesday's on 281 for supper. My #kitchenremodel is still a day or two away from completion. Once it is complete I will have to stop eating out so much.

Start out with Blue Moon beer in honor of the Blue Moon I missed yesterday. Ruby Tuesday? Really? I mean it's only water spots but come on---the beer glass if full of these spots. And again, really? That was the last bottle of Blue Moon beer? Shame.

The salad bar is well tended and the greens are nice and fresh. I was thoroughly enjoying my salad when the main entree arrived. I had to put my steak aside to finish my salad. It was that tasty.

Ordered the Sirloin Steak with Lobster Mac n' Cheese. Usually am strictly a rib-eye steak kind of guy but really wanted to try the mac n' cheese and this was the only entree with that combination.

Steak was a actually tender and juicy but the Lobster Mac n' Cheese was really the centerpiece of this meal. It had a great flavor and I wish I could have had another serving.

The sides of mashed potatoes and mushrooms were also good and tasted homemade.

I left Ruby Tuesday well sated and will return again soon. No room for dessert. Shame, because I really wanted to try the Italian Creme Cake.

REVIEW: Checker's Diner

Because I'm a viejito and not going out tonight, we stop @ Checker's Diner on Nacogdoches Road for supper.

I have the chicken livers: they were dry. The gravy had a nice homemade taste but still did not liven up my dry, dry chicken livers.

My sides of cabbage and yams were adequate. My cabbage had way too much tomato product and why did I order yams?

Cornbread was also dry. Guessing this place was having a moisture problem tonight.

Got a vanilla shake to-go. It was the best part of my meal. Fresh and tasty.

Asked for a doggie bag since the Chow Chows would not appreciate protein going to waste. Our ever helpful waitress drew a picture of a doggie right on the box. Cute.

REVIEW: Hung Fung Restaurant

As my #kitchenremodel continues and I yet to break-in the new range, headed on over to Hung Fung Chinese Restaurant on Broadway for supper tonight.

Had not been to this restaurant in years but in honor of my Jewish friend, ate here tonight. I will not return in a great many years to come.

Started out with the won ton soup. What was that green stuff floating in my bland soup?

For the main course had the Happy Family. The sauce was tasty but the shrimp had a soapy taste. The chicken was adequate and the beef was dry. The vegetables appeared to be still frozen in spots.

Needless to say I have had better Chinese food at Pei Wei and I hate Pei Wei.

Well at least we felt safe as we ate for a group of San Antonio Police SWAT dudes were eating at the table over from us. Notice the bullet proof vest protruding from the uniform of the one cop.

PS: Waiter was quick and attentive and I guess I am as they say in AVENUE Q a little bit racist because I anticipated that this Asian dude would speak with an Asian accent and not a southside of San Antonio accent. Confused the heck out of me.

REVIEW: It's Complicated

So it was a two movie; two theater kind of day. First went to Sherlock Holmes documented here and then dragged to another theater across town to see "It's Complicated".

First of all I thought it would be the AARP crowd in the audience for this movie, after all, Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin & Steve Martin are all pushing retirement age. I was wrong. It was a mixed crowd and like Sherlock Holmes earlier in the day, was a sell-out.

Even though I will forget this movie by next week, this movie had so many laugh-out-loud moments that it was easy to miss part of the dialogue. Seriously, there were so many side-splitting scenes that I didn't have a chance to take a nap like I had planned.

John Krasinski of The Office fame, was an integral part of the success of this movie. He had several scene stealing moments and definitely has a movie career when The Office is long over.

So if you just want to laugh-out-loud and have taken your geritol for the day, head on over to "It's Complicated". It will make you laugh and help you forget you now have to pay your VISA bill after buying all those Xmas gifts.

REVIEW: Sherlock Holmes

Even with having to sit on the front row and crane my neck upwards the 2 stories to see the screen, Sherlock Holmes, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, was a very entertaining flick.

We thought we got to Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Park North in plenty of time to find decent seats but when we entered the actual theater it was already packed with moviegoers. People were not in a very holiday spirit mood as no one was accommodating in moving down a seat so we could have seats together. We had to sit on the front row and believe me, that will be the last time I do so even though a pitcher of Blue Moon beer and the "Italian Job" pizza made it a bit more bearable.

I love how Director Guy Ritchie used the very Holmesian power of deduction throughout the movie. Holmes would analyze a fist fight for example, blow by blow, then execute it flawlessly all in the matter of a few seconds.

The bromance between Holmes and Watson was a good call in the casting department. As partners in crime(fighting) they made a most excellent team.

The plot was a bit contrived (save the world) but all in all this movie was a good exercise in holiday fun. You should see it, but not while seating in the front row. My neck will take days to recover from that experience.

PS: Oh yeah---there will be another Franchise for Downey after this flick.

PPS: I need to borrow Downey's personal trainer. Dude was ripped.

PPPS: Rachel McAdams was very capable as the former lover of Holmes.

PPPPPS: Kept thinking this movie was really made for Jason Statham with all the action and adventure. Maybe he turned it down?

REVIEW: Springhill Suites by Marriott, Flagstaff

Who knew there was a jewel in the middle of nowhere Arizona? OK---in the middle of Flagstaff, AZ?

Was in Flagstaff for the recent Doctoral graduation of my brother @TMarkM documented here. When we were in Flagstaff in May for his Faux Graduation we stayed at Little America Flagstaff but wanted to stay somewhere that was not right out of 1963.

As always I wait till last minute to find a hotel but that didn't seem to matter as Winter graduations are not as busy as Spring graduations. I wanted to stay somewhere new. Found out this place was recently modeled and I was sold.

The joint was completely modern and comfortable and rate appropriate too. Free Wifi. Free breakfast buffett. I recommend this place anytime you might be in Flagstaff.

It was convenient to everywhere we needed to be. OK, everything is real accessible in a small city like Flagstaff but this hotel right off the freeway made it seem even more so accessible.

Only complaint? Forgot to bring my trunks for the indoor heated pool and you can't find swimming trunks at stores in the middle of December in Flagstaff.

My brother Mark has worked hard for many years to get to this point of his life. He is the first Montoya and the first Saiz in our family to get a doctorate. It has been an incredibly difficult goal to attain. We are all incredibly proud of Mark and wish him only further success in his career.

Now a bit of advice: move to a real town with an International Airport so we can see each other more often. Seriously, consider a city with a moderate clime too.

What is it runners do before the big marathon? Carb up? This is MY version of going on the big road trip: Tex-Mex it up.

Heading out tomorrow by auto to Flagstaff, Arizona to see my brother @TMarkM walk across the stage on Friday to get his PHD. I need all the energy I can find for the long trip. 2400 miles round trip.

Stopped by Chacho's for my Tex-Mex it up.

Snack size Picadillo Nachos were so good. I usually get a larger size but wanted some papas that come with my main dish.

Had the Carne Guisada plate and it was just so so. Flavor was a little off tonight. The papas on this plate were delicious but did not make up for the funky flavor of the Carne G. Tortillas were nice and stove hot.

Every time I eat @ Chacho's I get so full. Tonight it was without the obligatory frozen margarita since this was take out.

This location on Nacogdoches Road has apparently won the taco wars because Taco Cabana across the street has been shuttered.

REVIEW: Thai Lao Orchid

So tired today. Late night. My poor tired eyes. Running around entertaining others is arduous work. When did I get so old?

For supper tonight ended up @ The Legacy @ 281 and 1604 for our first visit to Thai Lao Orchid. Do I remember this place being on Wurzbach and IH10?

Started out with the clear noodle chicken soup. It was stove hot. The hotness of the soup masked just how bland this soup really was made. My kingdom for a pepper shaker or something.

Always I have to try the Pad Woon Sen, here labeled Pad Woonsent, at every Thai restaurant I find. This one had broccoli in the list of ingredients. Michael does not do broccoli.

I had to pick from mild, medium or spicy for my dish. I chose spicy. Next time I might choose medium, the sucker was hot!

My dish was really tasty. Large pork portions and plenty of fresh mixed vegetables albeit spicy, spicy, spicy. Love me some glass noodles.

PS: For a restaurant lacking in customers, there were only three other tables occupied when we walked in, the cook took his sweet time preparing our dishes.

PPS: We could hear a ding, ding like the ding of a microwave announcing it's completion, coming from the kitchen area every 7 minutes or so. After a while this was very annoying.

PPPS: I was too full to try the sticky rice dessert. Boo.

RIP Tommy Montoya 1946-2006

Tommy didn't have to be my dad, I mean he only married my mom and I came along for the ride. But he was my dad until cancer took his too young life in 2006.

Happy Birthday today and Rest in Peace Tommy. I love you. Thank you for taking care of my mom.

Pix of the funeral luncheon are here. He loved the yellow LIVESTRONG bracelet so much we ordered several hundred and gave them out to friends and family alike. Some of us still wear it to this day.

PS: First pix is from 2002 when Tommy was healthy and still had some meat on him. Yes I am the giant of the family.

REVIEW: Brothers

I can think of ten different ways I wanted this movie to end and none of them are the way it actually ended. I think I need to find the original Danish Film and make my comparisons.

Solid acting by Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire but I think Natalie Portman was somehow miscast in this movie.

More a study in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder than in fraternal relationships, this war move still is able to evoke some strong emotions and explodes in just the right dark places.

REVIEW: Pho Cong

You know I looked up the recipe for Pho online and decided not to try and make it when the recipe was like 14 pages long. Ended up @ Pho Cong tonight on Bitters and West instead.

Started out with the Teriyaki Beef. First time we have had at this restaurant. Definitely will order again. The meat was tender and flavorful. I could have made a meal of this in itself.

Had the P19 Pho: Noodle soup with well-done flank; brisket; soft tendon and skirt flank. Plenty of meat and plenty of noodles. With the fresh condiments of cilantro; mint leaves; bean sprouts and jalapenos, my meal was complete and tasty.

As you know I rarely read the fortune from the fortune cookies because I don't believe in good or bad luck but stole S's fortune and thought it was funny as I held it up to read in front of the cock sauce.

After-wards, off to SAMS to walk off some of that belly filling Pho. Busted myself on one of their security camera thingy things they had for sell. Would make Mikey a great xMas gift don't you think?

You can't go wrong w/ Blue Moon Beer. Love their giant mug.

Appetizer, the bloomin' onion, already documented here in my first Instant Review: greazzzy.

House Salad with Honey Mustard Dressing: very tasty and fresh.

Medium Rib-eye Steak: too well marbled. Big glob of fat dead center of the steak made it instantly, almost, unappetizing. When I dug around the fat I was happy with the actual taste of the steak. Juicy and full of flavor.

Balloon Man, I guess his name was probably Bruce, was fluent in Spanish and rattled off the list of objects and animals he could create. He was telling all of this to the three year old across the aisle and not to me. Boo---I wanted to see if he could make a Chow Chow balloon doggy dog?

I was trying to think why I had never been to the Holiday River Parade in all my 15 years of living in San Antonio and then it dawned on me: I am always away during the Thanksgiving Weekend. Not away this weekend because I will see my mom and my bro on December 11th when he graduates with his PHD. Congratulate him why don't ya? @TMarkM

They are selling tix for the parade but since these are desperate times, we opt for the part of the river where seating is free. This part of the river only has a couple of the river trees lit up but hey, it is free and we camp out on a bench and have a pretty good view.

So it's super cold. Well, it's cold for San Antonians so I dig out gloves and a wool cap. My bald head gets cold easily.

The parade was cool and all. Got to see local fave @TheCletoShow as he was Grand Marshall.

Honestly? I will probably skip this parade next year if I am in town. I'll opt instead for the Fiesta Night parade in spring weather and not this parade in colder weather.

I asked for Barley Water not Budweiser. No matter, could not convince the waiter otherwise and drank the Budweiser he brought me anyway.

I saw that this place off of 410 and Blanco was Zagat rated so I had to give it a try since I heart Korean food. I think it's all the little side dishes they bring you.

Had the Beef Bulgogi. It's not the best I've ever had but it was pretty good.

Side of Kim Chi was just OK but the potato thingy was really good.

I would recommend this place and will definitely try it out again soon.

Note to self: must learn how to say Barley Water in Korean.

PS: next time add sushi combo to your order. Everyone else was doing it and it looked pretty good.

REVIEW: My Own New Mexico Style Stacked Enchiladas

In order to expand my stomach for tomorrow's gorge fest, tonight I feast on a steamin' greasy plate of enchiladas.

With New Mexico red chile sauce; big chunks of chuck hamburger meat and a trio of assorted shredded cheese all stacked (estilo Nuevo Mexicano) on corn tortillas, this meal tonight served it's purpose. Side splitting good.

With a side of jalapeno tamales from Delicious Tamales, review to follow tomorrow, this meal was oh so good. I had to roll myself to the living room for the Spurs game.

Thanks to the pricey prices @ Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, we ended up at this favorite tonight for a far better meal I am sure.

Obligatory Onion Rings and Chicken Fried Steak are always superb.

Pineapple Upside-down Cake was a bit on the dry side.

Waitress was slow and old as usual but heck when you've been working there for 50 years, you'd be slow and old too.

REVIEW: The Blind Side @ the newest Alamo Drafthouse Cinema

Note to Sandra Bullock: I forgive you for "All About Steve". This is the kind of movie you should make going forward.

This movie was just shy of being sappy and a degree less of being over sentimental and enough feel good to make me recommend it to my friends.

Things were just too safe and too perfect for my own protection. I needed a bit more grit but left with the first 'feel good" of the season.

Note to Tim McGraw: more Tim McGraw next time.

Movie: 3 Stars out of 5

So we went to the new Alamo Drafthouse Cinema @ Park North. The original @ Westlakes is just too far from where we live to make the trip worthwhile.

It's always nice to be able to drink beer with your movie but then again we already can do that @ Rialto or @ Bijou movie theaters in our hood and as I found out today, for a lot less.

Seems the menu was a bit on the pricey side so we only got beer (blue moon) and queso w/ chips instead of eating there as we planned. These are desperate times after all.

Still it's nice to have another movie option. We usually wind up @ AMC 24 because I like the extreme stadium seating. The seating @ Alamo was equally nice as they have a mini aisle for the waiters that spreads out the rows and makes it so that you have no view obstruction like you find @ Quarry Market Cinemas.

Theater: 3.2 Stars out of 5

PS: They had these quirky old timey ads and promos going on before the movie started including one that promoted their Beer Growler ala ipod commercial style. Cute.

PPS: it's always disengaging to enter a theater during the brightness of day and then exit during the darkness of night.

PPPS: It's difficult to take pix of your food in a darkened theater only on an iPhone with no camera flash.

Got invited to this #saladdressingtweetup at the Barn Door on North New Braunfels and since it's just down the street from me, I had no excuse not to attend.

Met @Janellerp; @bkearney and @MomonMars and had a great time. These girls were a lot of fun and are a must follow on Twitter.

Had the rib eye steak and it was full of flavor. Last time I was at this restaurant the rib eye steak was not as tasty but tonight it was melt in your mouth delicious. I ordered the smaller rib eye but as you see it filled my entire plate. Everything at this restaurant is of a generous portion.

But of course we came here for the salad dressing. I made the mistake of calling it Green Goddess to the waitress. The correct name is Creamy Garlic dressing and of course it is divine. Bernice called it Happiness on a Plate when accompanied by the handmade rolls as tweeted here.

This restaurant is definitely a mainstay in San Antonio. Prices are reasonable and I recommend you try this place if you have not been lately.

REVIEW: A Dong

The Beavis and Butthead in me wants to go: "Uh huh huh huh, you said dong."
This Vietnamese Restaurant is now in the Forum and since we were in the area and it's new, we gave it a try.
Of course I had the pho with assorted meats. One of the phos on the menu had fish balls. Insert Beavis and Butthead joke here.
My pho was really tasty although it could have been more stove hot for me. Plenty of assorted meats.
The garnishes were fresh: lime; mint; cilantro and jalapenos. What? No beansprouts. The dipping sauce was fresh and handmade.
PS: A progression of Asian peeps made it into the restaurant throughout the evening. Always a good sign.

Again, was trying to make it to Thousand Oaks Restaurant on Austin Highway but there was not ONE open parking spot. By default we ended up at Earl Abel's.

Papas were dry. Pork Chop was thin. Grape Jelly? Eggs were dry.

Highlight of the breakfast was a Brent Barry sighting. Who knew he still lived in San Antonio. I wanted to say Hi and maybe get a picture with him but in the end didn't want to disrupt his family time.

Brent is tall. Duh?

Missed this thing last year when I slept in on a Sunday and woke up to the news that they had a winner already and it was only 930A.

Seriously though, this thing was super fun. The announcer was super funny and made the wait super fun. Wish I didn't get stuck in traffic and miss some of the bands.

Next year we all run? We have a 365 days to get in shape---right?

REVIEW: Waffle House---Austin, TX

OK I want to know why San Antonio, the seventh largest city in the nation does not have a Waffle House?

At IKEA again Friday night. Designing a kitchen is arduous work.

Hungry and not wanting to eat at the IKEA cafeteria again, we stop at Waffle House near the airport.

Had the All Star Breakfast: 2 eggs over easy; toast; hash brown; bacon and of course the waffle.

First thing I noticed when they finally bring my waffle is that the waffles are now thin. So wrong.

Meals here are always good and quick. Our waitress repeatedly reminded us that she was new and working a different shift. Oh Wanda the Waitress.

So we had just hiked the Lost Maples State Natural Area documented here and we were ravenous. In Medina Texas we stopped at Keese's Bar-B-Que. We were never acknowledged and the place was not particularly busy. We left.

Headed to Kerrville and we stumble upon this place.

Burgers were fresh and tasty. My onions rings were heavenly. Prices were reasonable.

This place was GOOD. It could have been because we were famished? No matter, this place in Kerrville gets my seal of approval.

REVIEW: LOST MAPLES STATE NATURAL AREA

Peak Season is over.

This drought has been especially brutal this year on Lost Maples State Park near Vanderpool, Tx. I am told the colors are not as vibrant as in past years but what is this high desert, city boy to know? Everything looked really pretty.

This park must have been designed by a 23 year old. The trails are mostly primitive and there are some very steep sections of the park. I kept seeing old people and kept having to remind myself that if they can make it up to the summit, so could this man.

We went on a Friday because we are told the lines to get into the park are crazy during Peak Season. Friday was perfect as we didn't have much company on the trails.

See this is fun and exciting because the seasons are non-existent in San Antonio. People say it goes from Hot to not hot. Or that it goes from Summer to Winter back to Summer. Any bit of autumn like reminders, like leaves turning red and orange, is a welcome distraction to the next heat spell.

So if you are in shape and like the great outdoors, most definitely head 75 miles to the west of San Antonio and indulge in some great changing of the seasons. Otherwise, do a Google search for "leaves turn red".

PS: Note to future self---when you see the steep trail ahead signs turn back around.

PPS: Note to future self---bring two gallons of water---per person.

PPPS: Note to future self---bring a lunch---beetles and butterflies just doesn't cut it.

REVIEW: Blanco's Mexican Restaurant

We were headed for Thousand Oaks Cafe on Austin Highway but the joint was hopping for breakfast. and we literarly could not find a parking space.

Ended up at this restaurant instead. Have not been here in years.

Since I did so well on my diet these last few weeks I decided I could be a little piggy today.

Picadillo taco was delicious. Although I like my picadillo with papas, this one was seasoned just right.

Carne Guisada breakfast taco was OK. Had to season it with their green sauce.

Barbacoa taco was simply bland. The pico de gallo was dull looking & bland as well. I didn't eat it all.

PS: when I worked at the funeral home on Austin Highway in the late 90s we used to go here after our morning meetings. I would always order bacon tacos. Just bacon. It was a special order. One day I walked in and bacon taco was on the menu. I was so happy.

PPS: Alamo Heights High School athletic type girl eating breakfast with your team. I did not need the peep show everytime you crossed your legs.

REVIEW: Weezer - Ratitude

I remember buying the first Weezer CD (the Blue Album) from a Wal-Mart during a midnight grocery spree. I remember being surprised that Wal-Mart even carried the CD, this being 15 years ago and I was plumb in the middle of the bible belt or at least the bible buckle, in Amarillo, Texas.

A lot has changed in that 15 years. I wrote off Weezer somewhere along the way as irrelevant as my musical tastes developed. I came back in 2005 for their Make Believe CD which included Beverly Hills and Perfect Situation. Also enjoyed last years CD, (the Red Album) which included Pork and Beans.

I didn't even know they had a new album out until my brother @TMarkM tweeted about it yesterday. He is a die-hard Weezer fan. I'm sure they have some name for that but of course I don't know the name. Weezerheads? LOL.

Anyway their new CD Raditude dropped sometime this week. I especially like the album cover but hate the name Raditude after all these guys are all middle-aged and that sounds way too sophomoric to me. Wait? I'm middle-aged. Crap!

My fave song on the CD so far is (If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You to. This song is fast, infectious and catchy as all heck. Unmistakeably Weezer even with the acoustic guitar.

Another good song is The Girl Got Hot which has that stadium rocking vibe that is popular right about now.

Can't Stop Partying to me sounds like some version of a Linkin Park song. Is it just me? And what's with the rap interlude in the middle. My sources tell me it's Lil' Wayne. Audible sigh.

Another track worth mentioning is Love Is The Answer with it's Indian Sitar influenced melodies. It's OK but will need to grow on me as it's a bit to mellow for me.

Overall this album is a return to form for Weezer and the more I listen to it, the more I like. You should give it a try.

REVIEW: Dia De Los Muertos @ Market Square #SATX

I read about San Antonio's Market Square celebration including the participation of Las Monas Drum & Dance company. I saw these guys at the Fiesta Night Parade and had to see them again.

Along with Ballet Folklorico, altars to the dead and food, I had to attend this special event today. It's was lots of fun.

PS. I used to dance Ballet Folklorico when I was in 5th and 6th grade.

PPS. There are lot of pix but all worth it.

REVIEW: Le Peep

OK so I am still mad that Le Peep closed it's location in Alamo Heights/Oak Park. Had to trek all the way to Stone Oak to enjoy my fave breakfast place.

To start off with had the Chocolate Kiss Hot Chocolate thingy thing. It was was like 55 degrees outside so there was a distinct chill in the air. The drink was excellent as always. It warmed me up and tasted ever so good.

Things change. I opened the menu and my favorite meal was no longer there. The Down Home Sausage Pie was missing and I was a little annoyed. I was all ready to settle for something called the wanderer when the waitress came to take our order but I asked her about the DHSP because I was curious about it's disappearance. She made me so happy when she said they would be able to make that dish for me even though it is no longer on the menu. Joy.

When they brought out the dish, it was a bit smaller than I remember it being but it was still delicious and filling and lip smacking good.

REVIEW: Taco Palenque

Busy afternoon of running errands turn into busy night of catch-up. No time to cook so had take-out at this place that just opened on 410 between Broadway and Nacogdoches. I seem to remember a joint with this name on 410 near Marbach but I could be wrong.

Had the Carne Guisada Plate. The beef tips were dry not moist as is the Tex Mex tradition although it was flavored well.

The tortillas did not look very good. Again, not very Tex Mexy.

Rice was also dry or over-cooked. I did not try the beans.

What I did like was the Pico de Gallo and the Salsa. Both were fresh and spicy and flavored just right.

Did some research on this chain and found a lot of good stuff here on wiki.

Found out they are open 24 hours a day so that's also something good to keep in mind? Are Taco Cabana's open 24/7?

Bad thing was we thought the meal was a bit pricey considering this is still a fast food joint.

REVIEW: Leather Portfolio Notebook Thingy Thing

Back when I was in Prison---er---back when I worked in a Prison, I had these leather notebook portfolios thingy things made for me and my bro @TMarkM. The year was 1993. These portfolios thingy things were made by the Captain's "boy" for an obscene little amount of money. The prisoners were not allowed to make a profit on these outside projects. These leather notebooks are so well made I am certain they will last forever.

I was a substance abuse counselor for a Therapeutic Communities style of therapy at the Clements Unit in Amarillo, Texas called Lone Star Stay'n Out. The program was designed to treat substance abuse by making changes in attitude and behavior that would lead to a low recidivism rate. When I left the program we were operating at a high 80% success rate. Those were good times as I learned to be a tough cookie by working in a Prison Setting.

Mark had just started his educational career at New Mexico State University and had requested an Aztec theme. Poor Captain's "boy" came up with this design instead. It's still nice.

My design was the logo for that company. It means: the key to stay'n out (of prison) is Lone Star (therapeutic communities). The Zia symbol from the state flag of New Mexico is on the back of my portfolio. I'm a Native New Mexican.

It is a shame I now work from home. I would love to show off this Notebook thingy thing in an office somewhere.

PS: Wonder if Captain's "boy" is a free man now a days?

PPS: My walk-in closet in my apartment in Amarillo was larger than a cell at the Clements Unit.

PPPS: I got to meet Governor Ann Richards as this program was a pet project of hers.

My good friend Anika @arios5 had an inkling for a good burger so she asked me for some advice. I went duh?? Chris Madrid's. What follows is HER review.

This was a really good burger. Haven't been in a long time. Need to go more often. The fries where good as well. Regular fry was perfect for two.

PS: Anika is newly pregnant and we call her baby Raspberry since it is about as big as a raspberry. Raspberry gives two thumbs up too.

When fate hands you a gift card to Chili's and payday is a week away and you don't feel like cooking, you use the card to corporate chain bleh blah bleh restaurant.

They are running the 3 courses for $20 promotion that is very popular right about now.

We shared the Kickin' Jack Nachos. They were alright. Should have had the skillet queso instead.

Bacon Burger was my main course. It was good. I was hungry.

We shared the White Chocolate Molten Cake. I thought we would get some mini version of their usual dessert but it was the full size version. This sucker was good but again I was hungry.

So usually I hate this place---with a passion---but tonight we made due because money is tight. Damn Recession.

Thank you Metro Ambulance for the free gift card. Door Prizes are cool at conferences.

REVIEW: Sorrento's Ristorante

We usually go here for the food not the service. Tonight, this all changed.

This family owned Italian restaurant in Alamo Heights has always made solid handmade meals. Seriously, this family knows it's stuff.

Had the Greek salad and Cannelloni tonight. Absolutely a delight. Every ingredient fresh. Every bite an opera in your mouth.

Now for the service. We always seem to get stuck with a grump of a late middle aged waiter who makes it clear that he would rather not be serving you. One time he even changed the tip amount right in front of us because he said he deserved more tip. He throws the plates of food on the table. Neglects your table. Makes you wait for your ticket. He must be related for I am sure he would have been booted out a long time ago.

Tonight this disagreeable man was not there. We got who I imagine is the daughter of the owner. She was pleasant and agreeable. Met our every need even though she was also tending a large party.

So please give this place a try. Every dish, including the pizza, is well crafted and tasty. I suggest if you never have been here, to start with the house Lasagna. It is filled with meat and smothered in a pink sauce that is sweet. Out of this world.

REVIEW: Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen

They rolled me to the truck. They literally rolled me to the truck after we finished eating at Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen tonight. Stuffed I was after tonight's anniversary feast.

How much is 14 years worth at Pappadeaux ??? Apparently $5.50 a year.

Started out with the Twisted Hurricane: a blend of frozen papadocious & frozen margarita with SKYY Infusions raspberry & SKYY Infusions citrus vodkas. Strong and potent and instant rush to the head.

I have always liked that they make the Greek salad right at your table. Yes it's good and obligatory because the Pappas Brothers are Greek and know their Greek food.

Had the Titan Shrimp Platter: Shrimp prepared three ways, jumbo shrimp montage, shrimp brochette, & grilled shrimp all served over dirty rice with a side of zucchini strings. The grilled shrimp was ever so good. Just right. The stuffed shrimp was also very tasty. The bacon wrapped shrimp was a bit salty. Hello, it was wrapped in bacon but it was still a good dish.

No room for dessert. Did I mention they rolled me to the truck?

This place was hopping tonight. Didn't anyone know it was only a Tuesday? Locals know this place is usually a bitch to get into especially for mother's day, but tonight the wait was minimal. The waiter was super attentive and deserved his generous tip.

I need to get some black electrical tape. Cover up all these blue lights that keep me up at night. When did all our electronics get the blue light treatment? It needs to stop.

REVIEW: MacArthur High School Sprit Parade #SATX

Every year the high school in my neighborhood has a spirit parade right through the middle of my subdivision.

I have lived in this neighborhood by the airport for nine years. I have always meant to take pictures but always feel like such a perv taking pix of kids but since I was not the only one with a camera in the crowd tonight, I snapped away.

Ahh to be a kid again.

REVIEW: Ming Court at the Vineyard

I was so caught up in the rain and the accordions and accordions in the rain yesterday that I completely forgot I had a horrible eating experience.

Finding ourselves on the edge of Stone Oak, we happen upon Ming Court. My friends like Chinese food and you all know that I am very wary of Chinese food in San Antonio as it all has been very Americanized. We enter and they take our drink orders and say "help yourself to the buffet". Oh no---I loathe Chinese buffets. I had been duped.

Started out with pot stickers; cold. Corn nuggets; cold. Wings: cold. I was not off to a good start and you get where I am going with this post.

The only items I actually enjoyed were the lettuce wraps and won ton soup. Everything else was either cold or just not tasty at all. Dessert was a complete failure.

We were all pretty embarrassed as to the quality of the food in that buffet. We all left hungry. Now you can see why I was able to pig out at the International Accordion Festival a mere hour later.

So went to the International Accordion Festival documented here and finally got the quick video of couple dancing in the rain converted. Apparently my camera takes video in HD and couldn't get the blog to recognize it. Fingers crossed.

They were sweet and obviously in love. May we all be so in love.

Rainy and miserable today. Not a good day for concerts at outdoor venues. I braved the rain for the International Accordion Festival at La Villita today and had a great soggy time.

REVIEW: Chalk It Up

Looking for good cheap fun, I heard about Chalk It Up happening downtown today and decided that was for us.

The whole premise being that local artists turn the sidewalks and streets of downtown San Antonio into impressive works of art.

This was lots of fun and wish I would have know about this in previous years. Keeping this event on my calendar for next year.

We also headed down to Market Square to catch some accordion players but guess they were between sets and didn’t catch them for the International Accordion Festival. Maybe tomorrow?

REVIEW: Chris Madrid's

This review will be most unfair. I love Chris Madrid’s and have never had a bad burger there. Ever!

Tonight after the Chalk It Up thingy happening downtown, we drove by and much to our surprise found that it was not as busy as it can be on the weekends.

Had the Tostada Burger: Homemade refried beans, chips, onions, and creamy cheddar cheese on our delicious beef patty topped with fresh pico de gallo. Yes!!! Always tasty and always satisfying.

Get your butt to Chris Madrid’s soon. You know it’s been too long.

REVIEW: Couples Retreat

Wasting time before the CHALK IT UP thingy happening downtown, we step into AMC Rivercenter for a viewing of Couples Retreat. Had not been to this theater inside Rivercenter Mall on the riverwalk in years and believe me, it did not receive the stadium seating treatment many older theaters received in recent make-overs. And, I’m not certain that I wasn’t bitten by some kind of flea or bed bug or something.

This movie written by Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau from Swingers fame is not nearly as bad as all the critics have argued. Sure it is a forgettable fluff of a film but it engages you in just the right way that if you see it during a matinee, you will not have wasted your time or money.

There are many memorable and laugh out loud scenes including the yoga scenes with Carlos Ponce.

See it with the other half of your couple because after all no one wants to eat alone at Applebee’s on a Friday night.

3 out of 5 stars.

PS: This film was directed by first time director Peter Billingsley. Yes the dude from the 1983 A Christmas Story.

REVIEW: My own New Mexican Stir Fry

Usually I make this dish as a side dish but tonight decided it was hearty enough to eat as a meal in itself. Tonight, I also named it for the first time because usually I call it Ham with Potatoes; Mexican Squash and Corn. Since I cooked this dish in a wok, tonight I christened it: New Mexican Stir Fry.

In tribute to America's school children, tonight I also sing Mmm Mmm Mmm New Mexican Stir Fry good.

REVIEW: Robert Earl Keen - The Rose Hotel ( )

Thank you Vanessa. Vanessa was my boss when I worked at a funeral home in the late 90s. She used to hand out rodeo tickets for a job well done. Guess I was good because I was the proud recipient of Robert Earl Keen tickets. This is circa 1997?? I had not heard of REK but was eager to get out of the house on Vanessa's dollar. The coliseum was packed. The crowd was rowdy. The lights went down and the stage lit up. The place erupted in applause and hoots and hollers. For the next 90 minutes it was like I was at a Beatles concert. Everyone sang along to every song. I found myself thoroughly entertained by "Robert Keen, Robert Keen", and I have been hooked ever since.

With Robert Earl Keen's latest release, I remain hooked. The Rose Hotel, released September 29th, has been on my regular rotation since today. I know, I know, I am not really unbiased here since I truly worship the man for his singer/songwriter talent, but I have to let you know: go get this album. The album satisfies from start to finish.

Make no mistake, this is a country album, but REK will entertain any lover of music. REK is always able to turn an ordinary event and weave it into a beautiful song woven with touches of humor and darkness.

My favorite songs so far include 10,000 Chinese Walk Into A Bar and Wireless in Heaven and have been included here for your listening enjoyment.

REK writes cool, funny, alt-country songs. I have heard him compared to Elvis Costello of the country world. I am inclined to agree.

PS. Meet REK once at a book signing. Audible Sigh.

REVIEW: San Antonio Spurs Open Practice Sunday

So today we headed over to the Spurs Open Practice at AT&T Center: sweet!!!!

I am so excited about the new season. Everyone looks super healthy and I think our bench has great depth. There is much potential in this current line-up with just a few kinks to iron out.

It was great to see so many people there. It looked like almost the entire lower bowl was full of people. San Antonians love their Spurs.

Free tickets to three pre-season games was a plus as was the chance to win great seats for the season opener against New Orleans.

Timmy Duncan in a three-point contestant that he wasn't prepared for was fun to see.

The crowd was wild for Manu Ginobli.

Great seats we were in---I can only dream to have seats like this during the regular season.

So excited for the new season to start: Go Spurs Go!!!

REVIEW: Sonic

So everyone knows what I do most every day @ 330P: Sonic Run. Tonight I stopped there for dessert after eating @ Mama's tonight.

Mmm Mmm Mmm Butterfinger Sonic Blast. Mmm Mmm Mmm.

Tonic was playing while we were at the Sonic: Ironic??? LOL

And as always, Bluto attempts to take my treat when I make it home.

REVIEW: Mama's Cafe

What I learned tonight: never go to a Mama's Cafe on Nacogdoches when there is a huge party in a back party room. We waited nearly an hour for our entrees to arrive. I knew I should have ordered an appetizer.

Had the smothered steak w/ mashed potatoes and fried okra. Because I was starving I ate the whole thing. Because it could have been more tasty, I will probably regret it later tonight.

We grabbed a handful of quarters to play some rocking music on those mini jukeboxes they have at some of the booths. The place being packed, we didn't get a jukebox booth. Instead they sat us under the air conditioning vent. It was set on high. Everyone was perky at Mama's Cafe tonight.

All I wanted was some comfort food tonight but instead my belly was uncomfortable waiting nearly an hour for food. Also, freaking place was cold so I was uncomfortable seeing everyone in the joint perky. Yup, I was perky too.

REVIEW: Zombieland

Rule # 72: Mikey likey and you will to.

Everyone and I mean everyone, laughed out loud during this movie.

Woody Harrelson was perfect in his role as Tallahassee: “all I wanted was a Twinkie.”

Jesse Eisenberg, Michael Cera’s stunt double was also very likeable in his role as Columbus.

Emma Stone as Wichita proves fast girls move faster when there’s a zombie on your tail.

And my how that kid from Signs, Abigail Breslin, has grown up fast. She was Little Rock and will rock your world.

This movie succeeds because it never takes its self seriously. For instance there is a wonderful cameo by a wonderful comic actor that leads to a wonderful ending but I won’t spoil it for you. You’ll have to see it for yourself.

This movie is not all guts and gore and Shaun of the Dead but is simply a laugh out loud fest. In these desperate times, maybe this is what we all need right about now.

4 out of 5 stars.

PS: Heavy Metal soundtrack works wonders for this movie. Van Halen’s Everybody Wants Some is a scene stealer just like it was in Better Off Dead.

REVIEW: Asia Kitchen

Used to eat at this joint when I used to live in this area when I first moved to San Antonio and didn't know any better---any better where to live.

Off of Marbach & 410, Asia Kitchen is always packed. Is it because of the reasonable lunch specials or because of the good cuisine? I don t know?

Got the pad woon sen which is the glass noodles with shrimp. Chef thought it was funny to put brocolli in my dish. I have never seen brocolli in this dish before today. I loathe brocolli.

So it was edible but the serving portion was petite for being the lunch special. I'm still hungry. I'm a big boy after all.

REVIEW: Golden Wok

Dim Sum. Always I seem to miss the early Dim Sum on Saturdays or Sundays when they roll around the carts full of variety and choice. At other times you are limited to a limited menu. No biggie. I love to eat and still find plenty to consume.

Golden Wok is a fave from when we lived in that neighborhood but it is still worth the ten mile trek to get Pan Asian food. Today I chose Dim Sum.

Dim Sum is a traditional Chinese cuisine in which small portions of a variety of foods, including an assortment of steamed or fried dumplings are served in succession. Ha Ha---stole that right off the website.

Had lots of food tonight, all with unpronounceable names, but all better than the dish before it. Seriously, I always do enjoy the Dim Sum at this location on Wurzbach. Next time YOU are getting the invite to join me and we’ll have a giant Dim Sum party.

PS: the Koi Pond out front is always a Zen like experience.

REVIEW: Cheddar's Casual Cafe

So I have to admit I know nothing about Cheddars. On the outside it looks like a Chili’s or Applebee’s---well---on the inside it looks like those places too so thus began my new adventure today.

I got there on the NW side of town about 12:30P. The place was packed. I tweeted to see if I should remain in line or find somewhere else to eat lunch? @spamatdan tweeted back and said I should stay FTW. We took his advice and waited. Surprisingly our wait was not long even though there were tons of people before us.

I ordered the steak and chicken tenders with baked potato all the way and red beans and rice. I also ordered the buttered croissants since we did not get an appetizer.

My medium steak was without flavor and dry. I think the chefs did not let the steak rest after cooking. The chicken tenders were good and appeared to be fresh and hand-made. The best part of the meal was the red beans and rice. Again, it appeared fresh and hand-made. The croissants were good but way greasy with the sweet butter.

I almost felt like I was being rude to the waitress who was being super polite and attentive but we just could not hear her when she would come by our table. The place was super busy and super noisy. I blamed it on the ceiling fan contraction above us: pretty but scary.

The place is brand new and as we all know San Antonians love to go to new restaurants. I should have waited a while longer before going to this one. I think some kinks still need to be worked out.

The prices were reasonable so next time I am in the area I will give it another shot. Now if we only had one on MY side of town???

PS: the clouds were pretty and hung very low as we exited the restaurant that still had a huge line of people waiting both inside and out.

REVIEW: PIEDRAS NEGRAS DE NOCHE

What am I---a viejito??? We ate supper tonight at 5PMish---because we were hungry.

We were in the area just south of downtown so we stopped at Piedras Negras. I am used to eating at this place late at night after a night on the town. 5PM saw a whole different crowd for sure.

I had the Steve’s Plate: enchiladas; tamales; taco; tostada and obligatory rice and beans. The food was fine but I can find just as good or better Mexican food closer to my house. I won’t be in a hurry to come back to this Mexican food joint.

PS: This place used to be housed next door in this two story building with steep, steep stairs and mirrors on every wall. Then there was a fire so they moved into the old Pizza Hut building next door and to this day, there they still remain. Seems like it has been years or is just my viejito memory???

PPS: I never knew the real name of this place was Piedras Negras de Noche. I have always just called it Piedras Negras. LOL---I am viejito.

REVIEW: William's Confectionery Crafts

Looking for somewhere Mom & Pop to eat, did a quick search on Yelp and ended up at William’s Confectionery Crafts on the NE side of town.

First of all the place is small and was standing room only when we arrived at 10:30A. We sat at a makeshift counter that overlooked the front window.

I had the breakfast special: Bacon, Eggs, Grits, & Toast. This was very tasty and definitely home-made.

The wait staff were all very friendly and eager to serve. I recommend this place if you are in the neighborhood by NE Methodist Hospital. I will have to try their lunch menu next time.

PS: Since the joint has Confectionery in its title, had to try something sweet for the road. I grabbed this pecan tart thingy which was good and fresh albeit a bit dry. They have a nice selection of sweets and cakes and pies.

REVIEW: THAI CHILI TAKE-OUT

So you starve a cold; feed a fever. What do you do when you suspect H1N1? Eat Woon Sen Soup w/ Pork of course!!!

Thai Chili is one of my fave Thai places in town. It’s only 4 miles from my home so perfect for some take-out.

So I tackled my suspected case of swine flu w/ pork and glass noodles soup: always spicy and always good.

I’m sure I will make it in to work tomorrow after eating this tonight. It cleared up every last bit of illness that was clinging to my raggedy body.

REVIEW: HA PHO LONG

So it took 38 miles for us to meander along the south side from the north central part of town only to end up on the northwest side of town today at HA PHO LONG for lunch. It helps to have a plan. Well at least I wasn’t’ wasting MY gas. I tweeted for suggestions of places to eat but everyone was ALL LATE. LOL.

No web address for this popular Vietnamese noodle shop across from Ingram Park Mall but the food has always been good.

Had the #11 and of course I have already forgotten what the meats are in this pho but whatever they were they were delicious. Noodles were tender and the assorted meats were tender. The garnishes were fresh and always add to overall flavor of the soup.

Their version of bubble tea is called boba tea. Had the mango and it was super sweet and super delicious too.

So if you ever find yourself on a 38 mile trek around the city, head on over to HA PHO LONG and enjoy a big giant bowl of pho. I personally guarantee it.

PS: What’s the difference between the large and small bowl---75¢.

PPS: Next time I’ll try the soul cooking place this guy was hawking on his wearable cardboard sign.

PPPS: Wait staff was super attentive and polite. When you go to an Asian restaurant and it is full of Asians, you know your meal will be good. When you go to an Asian restaurant and it is empty of Asians, you know the place has been Americanized. This place was packed with Asian diners.

REVIEW: Muse - The Resistance

My friend GB recommended this band’s newest release last night and to be honest with you I had never really paid attention to this band.

Then it turns out they were on the MTV Video Music Awards the other night but darn, I stopped watching that show years ago.

Found their music online and took a listen. I’m digging what I’m hearing.

Muse are a twist of Queen and Radiohead and U2 and Classical Music. Somehow the combination is good progressive rock meat pie.

This sound is definitely fresh and welcomed right about now. Most new music is bland in my opinion.

Their first single is Uprising. Lyrics that speak of liberty but not in a preachy way are core to the success of this song. Bouncy and slightly poppy, this song should be a hit.

My fave song on the album is United States of Eurasia. This is the song with a strong Queen homage. I look forward to seeing them (fingers crossed) live when they open for U2 next month.

So if I had to rate this album, after only two listens, I would give them 3.5 stars out of five. Every song is familiar yet fresh and I was left wanting more.

Give them a listen why don’t ya???

REVIEW: Pralinutta Duo

So you already know my pre-occupation with the chocolate hazelnut spread called Nutella, but I have found another product that just might take the place of my usual morning snack. Found Pralinutta Duo next to the Nutella in the peanut butter aisle of my Lincoln Heights Grocery Store.

It looks like nutella but would it taste like nutella?? Gosh darn-it, it did. And this tasty spread was less expensive too.

I totally recommend it for your mid morning pick-me-up snack. Mine was on H-E-B French Toast bread. Yummy.

REVIEW: Josephine Street Cafe

Last time I reviewed this local fave was in January of this year and documented here. Tonight, on the verge of a rainstorm, I review it again and find that I had the exact meal as I did nine months ago. I am the king of consistency: the king Saiz of consistency.

Always have loved the little beer glasses at this joint. Where can I snag me a set?

Sausage and queso for the appetizer as usual, apparently, but it is oh so good. I don’t seem to remember the queso being on the side but it was a good idea as we could slather the queso on the heart attack on a plate appetizer as we desired. This appetizer is so delicious. You must try it.

So sitting under the light of the blue neon sign which reads steaks, it hits me, order the rib eye steak dorkus maximus. If we would have sat in the exact opposite side of the building the blue neon sign reads whiskey. How different my night could have been.

Rib eye steak was a bit fatty but still full of flavor. Those mashed potatoes are always tasty too.

Then the rain hit. A stampede of people ran into the little building from the eating patio to escape the downpour. As every table was already occupied they just stood around with their drinks and plates. Those funny pictures did not come out clearly with the poor lighting in the restaurant and the poor iPhone camera.

This is a place we often frequent before a Spurs game but the neighborhood is changing. S says the Liberty Bar next door is moving to Southtown and will be replaced by a parking garage. Makes me wonder how much longer Josephine Street Café will be around too? Go quickly and enjoy before they are BOTH gone.

REVIEW: Tong's Thai Restaurant

When I used to work in the Austin Highway area in the late 90s, eating at Tong's Thai was a weekly experience where eating just the combination fried rice was a meal in itself. And although this restaurant is still pretty much in my neighborhood, for some reason have not been here in quite a while.

Always I gravitate to the Pad Wun Sen on a Thai menu. Off the lunch menu: glass noodles sautéed with chicken, green onions, celery and carrots and bean sprouts in a garlic/ginger soy sauce. This was pretty good but I could taste the thickening agent for the sauce. Whether it was flour or corn starch or something else, there was a hint of something that didn't quite belong. Something almost raw tasting. But this didn't stop me from cleaning off my plate.

Potato soup was delicious. Wish the bowl was bigger because my bowl was quickly emptied.

I let the waiter pick my bubble tea for the ride home. It was called Tiger something or another with a combination of mango and other tropical fruits I quickly forgot. Sprinkled on top w/ peanuts which I learned sank to the bottom and were only sucked up through the wide straw when I was almost finished w/ my drink. The tapioca pearls were tasty and plentiful.

All in all it was nice to be back at Tong's Thai for some good food. The interior had been remodeled since last I was here and it appears to have picked up a hip; eclectic crowd. Was I really the oldest one in the room??? You should try it again too.

REVIEW: HOUSE OF PIES in Houston

It was after some late night/early morning binge that I first discovered House of Pies in Houston and always make an effort to make a quick stop when I am in the Bayou City.

Since there are no more Bennigan’s in San Antonio, saw the Monte Cristo Sandwich on the menu and thought I’d give it a try. Understandably, a place called House of Pies probably isn’t going to make the best Monte Cristo out there. Sadly, that was the case here. I barely ate a fourth of my sandwich as it was greasy and cold and slimy all at once. Do not recommend it.

Got a slice of the French Blackbottom to go; always good---always fresh.

This place is on Westheimer in Houston, so next time you are in H Town. Give their pies a try. I think the other food is not so good unless you are drunk.

I would love to open up my own pie shop here in San Antonio. I am mulling over these two names: Pies in the House of Love or Pie Town.

First name was stolen from Was Not Was – Spy in the House of Love. Enjoy.

Second name was stolen from that little town in New Mexico: Pie Town.

REVIEW: San Jacinto Monument

When I first moved to Texas I sub-contracted for the State of Texas as a substance abuse counselor in the Prison systems. In addition to the normal and usual Federal Holidays like Labor Day, we were also granted a fistful of State Holidays including San Jacinto Day. It was nice to have a Holiday almost every month.

Now first thing I wanted to do was pronounce Jacinto in Spanish but was quickly told that it was not pronounced in Spanish but with the soft J sound. I relented.

So I was always fascinated with Saint Hyacinth after that stint in Prison and finally learned after 14 years in Texas, that the monument to this battle was a mere 20 miles east of Houston. This was the battle of all battles as it granted Texas independence from Mexico. As these are desperate times and no room in the budget for my usual big Labor Day trip, boot scooted over to Houston for a day trip.

First thing you notice is that you are in the middle of refinery city. Tanks and refineries dot the landscape for a good 10 miles before you even reach the monument. I am sure this was pristine bayou back in 1939 when the monument was completed but today it is smelly, oily money.

$1 to get in---you can't beat that, and my adventure was to begin. I have to admit that this monument is better looking than the Washington Monument. Something about the crowning star that just sets the monument apart.

Whisk up to the observation deck for a quick view of the scenery and instantly disappointed. I had it in my head that we would get to go to the star crown for a viewing. We were a good three stories below in the hermetically sealed, not for the claustrophobic, full of kids, observation room. The views were awesome. Shame it was cloudy and about to rain so the view to downtown Houston was not very clear.

So I did my patriotic duty and took in a History Lesson of the San Jacinto Monument. I live in the city with the Alamo so I guess I just need to find me other historical spots to visit soon. Any ideas?

The words San Jacinto pop up often in popular Texas culture. This song from the 90s always reminds me of a special time and place. David Garza mentions San Jacinto about 1:16. Dude is from Austin. Enjoy.

REVIEW: Zito's Delicatessen & Sandwich

So I have passed by this place on Broadway and 410 half a million times. I always thought the place was out of business because I never see any cars parked out front. Turns out they are only open for lunch. My friend I.R. recommended this place but she's the one who recommended this other place before and it was not so good. I was wary. But I ventured on today for I was hungry for something different.

No website and no to-go menus so I went on intuition and selected the house special. They had the whole sandwich for $9 and change and the halfahouse for $6 and change. Got the halfahouse. OK I admit I am not to sure what kind of meat or cheese or sauces were in this Italian inspired sandwich but the sucker was way good. Should have ordered the whole sandwich. I was left wanting more. I will definitely return.

BTW, the place was packed and the cashier knew several of the patrons by name. It's nice to be a regular.

OK, here’s the deal. John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods wrote this OP ED piece in the Wall Street Journal suggesting market-based alternatives to the current administration’s plan for health care reform. I have read his piece up and down and was unable to understand why a boycott of Whole Foods has been orchestrated by this guy here. A lot of what Mr. Mackey said makes perfect sense to me. So it boils down to freedom of speech and if you boycott everything you do not agree with, you’ll find yourself in a party of one.

That’s why I was inclined to join the local buycott, details are here. And although I was unable to attend at the appointed hour, I shopped at Whole Foods today in support of John Mackey’s right to free speech and made supper with what I purchased.

Now for the food: Linguini with sausage and yellow peppers made with a butter sauce and sprinkled with arugula, made for a tasty and quick and easy supper. The chicken sausage from the meat market at Whole Foods was fresh and spicy. And isn’t arugula often the butt of Whole Food jokes? I just had to mix some in the dish instead of the usual spinach and it added a more rugged and rich flavour to the mix.

For dessert found this freshly made Blueberry White Chocolate Bread Pudding in the bakery department of Whole Foods. Totally crisp and savoury, it was totally worth the $5.99 for the 28 oz dish. Totally.

So although I do not often shop at Whole Foods, I felt disposed to support the buycott because I do not agree with the boycott. Make sense? I’m all about freedom and the coercion and hatred coming from the folks of the boycott was something I just could not ignore. Mr. Mackey simply expressed an opinion. This opinion did not sit well with the boycott organizers so as is their tactic, they have attacked their target. Mr. Mackey you do not stand alone and I support your right to express your opinion even if it does not agree with the current administrations directives.

And why can’t we bring our own ideas to the discussion? Why does it have to be enacted so quickly? There is time to figure this all out. What can I say? I’m a Libertarian.

BTW, Whole Foods was busy. As usual.

REVIEW: Gelato's Dulce de Leche with Hatch Green Chile

So yesterday on my little spending spree at Central Market H-E-B, in my quest for the green chile Holy Grail, I stumbled upon this little ditty in the frozen section.

I had been contemplating making my own green chile ice cream but have been way too lazy. Thought this would be a nice substitute. Nope.

The Dulce de leche flavor just did not go with the green chile flavor at all. It was almost bitter & with an unpleasant after taste.

Save your $$$$. It was pricey. I didn't even finish my bowl.

REVIEW: China Latina

Always think of eating at China Latina down in Southtown or is it King William on Sundays? On Sundays it is closed. Swung on by after trip to suburban Seguin to get S's Chinese kick.

Steamed Dumplings for appetizers. Drizzled with ginger sauce and these things were almost perfect. Pork meat in dumpling was so very good.

Won Ton soup for the second course. This soup was also so very good. Seasoned just right I wish I could have had a bigger bowl.

For the main course had the Mongolian Lamb. This dish was also so very good. With Scallions and hoison sauce I couldn't get enough of this dish either.

Usually I do not like Chinese Food as I think it has been way too Americanized. Usually I prefer Korean or Thai but this meal tonight was one I can personally guarantee. It was that good.

Kudos to waitress Regina who was an expert at great service. I will ask for her again next time I am here.

I almost never read the fortune cookie because I simply do not believe a piece of paper baked inside a sugar cookie can reveal much of anything. For some reason tonight I opened the cookie and found it so very appropriate.

REVIEW: Whataburger

OK so woke up this morning feening for some Chris Madrid's. Anything and everything off their menu is sooo good.

But I only have a 30 minute lunch and not enough time to drive down there. Since I already had burgers on my mind made a quick stop at Whataburger which I thought would do the trick. Well let me tell you something about Whataburger. I mean their burgers are good for fast food but why they have to use tissue to wrap the burgers?? By the time I get home---it's only two miles away, my burgers are cold??

And another thing. Can not get my green chile kick at Whataburger. So---I improvised and topped my jalapeno burger w/ my own chopped fresh green chile. In New Mexico we call that a Lotaburger. It'll do for now but still looking to make it to Chris Madrid's sometime this weekend. Why are you always packed Chris Madrid's??? Why???

REVIEW: CHUY'S @ the Forum (Green Chile Festival)

Met friends tonight for drinks and grub. Last time I was here I was not so impressed. This time it was different.

Good friends always make for good times and their 21st Annual Green Chile Festival make it doubly good. Of course by now you know I am totally on my Green Chile kick so when plans changed from PF Changs to this place, I was a little happy inside.

Started out with the Green Chile stew for my appetizer. Always good and with just the right amount of kick. I tried to share it but no one took me up on that offer.

Had the Southwestern Enchiladas: blue corn tortillas stuffed w/ roasted chicken, cheese and green chile, topped with a fried egg. Almost as good as mom makes. Almost.

Ralph was the only other one in our party to order off the green chile menu. He had the Tacos Norteños: homemade corn tortillas stuffed w/ marinated steak and Mexican slaw. He said they were super yummy too.

So last time we were there it was too near their grand opening. This time they have ironed out the kinks. But be aware, Green Chile Festival ends soon.

This marks four meals or more this week where I was able to incorporate Green Chile into the meal. Tomorrow?? We shall see.
